Sanding

Atlas Fibre offers a range of machining and fabrication capabilities, including the ability to sand materials using a computer numerical control (CNC) machine. We can machine many types of thermoset materials, including glass and phenolic. Along with being a supplier of thermoset composite shapes, we have more than 60 years of experience with sanding and machining. Learn more about CNC sanding and how this process can benefit your project.

What Is Sanding?

During sanding, a piece of material, such as a thermoset composite, is rubbed with an abrasive material to create a smooth surface with a precision thickness. There are several ways to sand materials, though some are more effective than others. One option is to use a piece of sandpaper, which is rough and abrasive on one side, and rub the paper over the surface of the composite.

A more efficient option is using a CNC machine to plane — or sand — composite sheets. CNC sanding allows you to start your manufacturing process with a flat sheet of your composite material that does not need to be machine-milled. Using our state-of-the-art CNC sanding equipment we can precisely control thickness as well as surface finish.

What Are the Benefits of Sanding Composite Materials?

Sanding creates a smooth surface on a material, which can be tailored for your application. A controlled and consistent roughness ideal for gluing, or even a dull shine suitable for cosmetic applications.. This process also removes imperfections and prepares the material for the next step.

Materials Atlas Fibre Can Sand

We can sand any thermoset sheet to stringent design requirements. Thanks to CNC sanding, your machine shop can begin with a flat sheet of composite and save time when you can skip milling it. At Atlas Fibre, we supply the following sanded composite materials:

  • Sanded G10: G10 is a type of glass epoxy that takes on a dull lustrous finish when sanded.
  • Sanded Fr4: FR-4 is another type of glass epoxy composite material and gains a similar finish with sanding.
  • Sanded G11: G-11 can withstand higher temperatures than G-10 and is compatible with CNC sanding.
  • Sanded linen phenolic: Linen phenolic has a glossy surface after molding to start, and sanding smoothes the surface and improves the bond when gluing.
  • Sanded canvas phenolic: Because the weave is larger, canvas phenolic may have an even rougher hand feel than linen phenolic after gloss removal and would benefit from sanding.

Why Work With Atlas Fibre

Atlas Fibre can turn raw materials into finished components. We have the capabilities to machine and fabricate composite materials using CNC milling and turning machines. We can machine and sand all types of glass and phenolic thermosets. While we cannot sand thermoplastics, we can machine nearly all types of them.

We’re uniquely qualified to sand and fabricate your components, thanks to our decades of experience with thermoset materials. We also act as a resource center, helping you determine which material best meets your needs. We’ll work with you to help you assess a material’s corrosion resistance, wear abilities, weight, and noise reduction abilities.
