Glass Melamine Overview

Glass melamine is made from woven glass fabric coated with melamine resin. Melamine is a compound used in the production of plastic products. It’s known for its resistance to alkali solutions, heat, flame, and arc. Glass melamine laminate qualifies for MIL-I-24768/1 and NEMA G9. It has many uses, such as electrical equipment, slot wedges, and switchgears.

Types of Glass Melamine

Two types of glass melamine exist — G-5 and G-9.

G-5 Glass Melamine

G-5 glass melamine is an older type of material that permits higher levels of water absorbtion. G-9 has largely replaced it. Products and drawings will occasionally note G-5 material, which is interchangeable with G-9.

G-9 Glass Melamine

G-9 glass melamine is a composite laminate made from continuous filament glass cloth and a melamine resin binder. It’s a hard material that is flame and arc resistant. It maintains its electrical insulative strength even in wet or humid conditions. It machines well, has good dimensional stability, and offers high mechanical strength.

G-9 glass melamine can withstand temperatures up to 140 degrees Celsius (284 degrees Fahrenheit).

The physical properties of G-9 are:

  • Tensile strength: 70,000 psi
  • Specific gravity: 1.85
  • Compressive strength: 39,000 psi
  • Flexural Strength -LW -A 0.125”:  55,000 psi
  • Hardness — M Scale: 115
  • Bond strength: 1,900 psi
  • Shear strength: 18,000 psi
  • Flammability rating: 94V-0
  • Coefficient of thermal expansion °C (x 10-5): 1.50
  • Water absorption — 24 hours: 0.60
  • Izod impact strength at 49°C -LW:  12.50

The dissipation factor of G-9 at 106 cycles, Condition A, is 0.015. The dielectric constant is 7.00, and its electric strength, V/MIL condition A, is 450.

Glass Melamine Laminate Shapes

Glass melamine is available in several stock shapes and sizes. As the primary supplier of thermoset composite materials in North America, Atlas Fibre is proud to offer a selection of forms:

  • Glass melamine sheets: We have G-9 sheets available and can fabricate them based on your specifications. The sheets are available in a range of thicknesses and dimensions.
  • Glass melamine tubes: Glass melamine is one of the hardest laminate materials available, making it ideal for shaping into tubes. We offer a range of tube diameters and lengths in stock.
  • Glass melamine rods: Glass melamine rods are available in various thicknesses and lengths. They consist of a continuous glass woven cloth base and melamine resin binder.

Uses for Glass Melamine

G-9’s mechanical properties make it a good choice for humid or wet conditions. It’s often used in electronic or electrical applications. Some common uses for glass melamine include:

  • Arc barriers
  • Circuit breaker components
  • Architectural insulation
  • Motor wedges
  • Switchboard panels
  • Switch mounts
  • Terminal boards
  • Specialty terminal blocks
