Glass Silicone Overview

Glass silicone is a glass fabric coated with silicone resin. It has excellent arc resistance, high heat resistance, and a low dissipation factor. The material is flame resistant and meets MIL-I-24768/17 and NEMA G-7 standards. Glass silicone materials are ideal for use in applications that require good electrical and mechanical properties. It works in both dry and humid conditions.

G7 Glass Silicone

G7 glass silicone excels when used in electronic, electrical and mechanical applications, particularly those that require materials to have high mechanical strengths and withstand extreme temperatures. It can manage exposure to temperatures up to 220 degrees Celsius (428 degrees Fahrenheit).

The specific properties of G7 glass silicone are*:

  • Tensile strength: 45,000 psi
  • Compressive strength: 18,000 psi
  • Flexural strength – LW -A 0.125″: 25,000 psi
  • Bond strength: 900 psi
  • Shear strength: 17,000 psi
  • Hardness — M Scale: 105
  • Izod impact strength at 49°C -LW: 6.50
  • Water absorption — 24 hours: 0.20
  • Specific gravity: 1.78
  • Flammability rating: 94V-0
  • Coefficient of thermal expansion °C (x10-5): 1.00

Glass Silicone Shapes

As the main supplier of thermoset composites in North America, Atlas Fibre has access to more than $8 million worth of raw materials at our Illinois warehouse. We have an additional $4 million in inventory at our partner facilities, which are located in Massachusetts and Hyderabad.

We can use these materials to craft components in the following glass silicone shapes:

  • Glass silicone tubes: Glass silicone tubes are hollow and available in a range of diameters. You can choose the tube’s length based on your project needs.
  • Glass silicone rods: Glass silicone rods are solid and have many applications. You can choose the length and diameter of the rod to meet your requirements.
  • Glass silicone sheets: Glass silicone sheets are available in various thicknesses and standard dimensions. You can also contact us to request a custom sheet size for applications requiring non-standard specifications.

Uses for Glass Silicone

Glass silicone’s benefits include outstanding arc and heat resistance. This material also maintains its electrical properties in humid conditions and is self-extinguishing. These benefits make glass silicone a good pick for the following applications:

  • Insulation
  • Arc barriers
  • Welding tips
  • Heating systems
  • Appliances

It can also be used in the following:

  • Arc plates
  • Terminal boards
  • Spacers
  • Sleeves
  • Wedges
  • Welding tips

Glass Silicone Use in Welding Tips

Due to its electrical resistance and stability at high temperatures, Glass Silicone Tube (G7) is often used for the tips inside of welding guns. Atlas Fibre has extensive experience in the manufacturing and fabrication of welding tips.
