What Is Grade LE Phenolic?

We form grade LE with phenolic resin impregnated into layers of linen by applying heat and pressure. The resulting polymerization transforms the material into a wear-resistant thermoset plastic.

Our LE phenolic laminate boasts the following key properties*:

  • Flammability rating: 94HB
  • Water absorption — 24 hours: 1.8
  • Maximum operating temperature: 125° Celsius (257° Fahrenheit)
  • M-scale hardness: 100
  • Specific gravity: 1.34
  • Shear strength: 13,500 pounds per square inch (psi) [96 megapascals (MPa)]
  • Tensile strength: 36,000 psi (248 MPa)
  • Compressive strength: 13,000 psi (89 MPa)
  • Flexural strength – LW -A 0.125″: 18,000 psi (124 MPa)
  • Bond strength: 1,900 psi (13 MPa)
  • Izod impact strength at 49°C – LW: 1.35

Fabrication

Thanks to its tighter weave, LE phenolic is easily workable and suitable for many machining processes.

Thanks to its tighter weave, LE phenolic is easily workable and suitable for many machining processes. We generally recommend it over our cotton canvas-based phenolics when manufacturing small or intricate components due to its finer texture for enhanced surface appearance. Atlas Fibre carries various sizes of rods, tubes, and sheets.
